Read this and you will never use anti tick powder on your dogs

There are many anti tick powders available in market. They are very convenient to use. And of course they are very cheap too. Pet owners buy them and use them on their dogs unaware of harm it will cause to human especially children.

The composition of these anti tick powder are basically pesticides. Such as fipronil , cypermethrin or propoxur .
When you apply powder and even if you brush your dog some of these powder remains stuck to your dog's hair.
Therefore, when you pat your dog or hug, these powder comes to you. The dog through its movement and shaking continuously spread the powder in air. This way this pesticide powder goes into your lungs too.
Now, let's see what these element does to our body. How it affects our health.
Effect of cypermethrin in human
Cypermethrin is toxic to the nervous system. Symptoms of exposure include dizziness, nausea,
headaches, and seizures. It also suppresses the immune system, inhibiting the formation of
antibodies to disease-producing microbes.
If exposed to cypermethrin during pregnancy, rats give birth to offspring with developmental delays.
In male rats exposed to cypermethrin, the proportion of abnormal sperm increases. It causes
genetic damage: chromosome abnormalities increased in bone marrow and spleen cells when mice
were exposed to cypermethrin. Cypermethrin is classified as a possible human carcinogen becaue it
causes an increase in the frequency of lung tumors in female mice.
Among structural pest control operators in California, cypermethrin is the fourth most common
cause of pesticide-related illness.
After household treatments, it persists in the air and on walls and furniture for about three months.
Effect of propoxor in human
This is present in nearly all anti tick powders for pets.

Acute Health Effects
The following acute (short-term) health effects may occur
immediately or shortly after exposure to Propoxur:
* Exposure to Propoxur can cause severe Carbamate
poisoning with headache, sweating, nausea and vomiting,
diarrhea, muscle twitching, loss of coordination, and death
Chronic Health Effects
The following chronic (long-term) health effects can occur at
some time after exposure to Propoxur and can last for months
or years:
Cancer Hazard
* There is limited evidence that Propoxur causes cancer in
animals. It may cause cancer of the bladder.
Reproductive Hazard
* There is limited evidence that Propoxur is a teratogen in
animals. Until further testing has been done, it should be
treated as a possible teratogen in humans.
Other Long-Term Effects
* No chronic (long-term) health effects are known at this
Effect of fipronil in human
I know a dog, a golden retriever.

This five-year old Golden Retriever is brought  with ear and eye discharge three weeks after receiving a dose of Fipronil powder.
The symptoms go away within a month.
When the dose of Fipronil is repeated, the dog develops an ear infection that improves after about six months, but never goes away. The dog dies from liver cancer two years later.
Let's summarize the effects
  • The primary symptoms of intoxication with fipronil and other phenylpyrazoles affect mainly the Central Nervous System (CNS).
  • Most frequent symptoms are:
    • Ataxia (uncoordinated movements)
    • Hyperreactivity (exaggerated reaction to stimuli)
    • Tremor (uncoordinated trembling or shaking movements)
    • Cramps (sudden, involuntary contractions of muscles)
    • Convulsions
    • Abnormal gait
    • Seizure
  • Other symptoms reported after fipronil poisoning includetwitchingnoddingaggressionsweatingnausealack of appetitevomitingheadacheabdominal paindizzinessagitation and weakness.
  • Symptoms appear a few hours after exposure, but depend strongly on the formulation, the dose and the kind of contact (skin, inhalation, ingestion etc).
  • Sustained skin exposure can cause local dermatitis (skin irritation) with pruritus (itching) and erythema (red skin).
  • In chronic toxicity studies in rats, liverkidneys and thyroid gland were also affected.

Therefore, it is best to use anti tick shampoo and wash out the chemical than to use powder.
